Sorting It Out the Right Way: Eco-Friendly Decluttering You Can Feel Good About

At Sort It Out, we believe that organizing your home isn’t just about clearing clutter—it’s about doing it responsibly. As part of your home organizing package, you are entitled to one trunk full of donations per organizer per day, helping you part with excess items in a sustainable way.

Sustainability is at the core of our mission. We're committed to ensuring that your unneeded items are disposed of thoughtfully and respectfully, keeping as much as possible out of landfills. Here's how we make a difference:

How Sort It Out Disposes of Items Sustainably:

  1. Food Donations:
Extra, unopened food items are donated to community resources like the Little Free Food Pantry at The Falls Church Episcopal Church, ensuring they reach those who need them most.

  2. Electronics Recycling:
Unwanted electronics are taken to Falls Church E-Asset Solutions, where they are securely wiped of any personal data before being properly recycled. Electronics like computers, printers, phones, cords, and more are processed here, helping to prevent hazardous materials from entering our soil and water.

  3. Battery Disposal:
We safely dispose of used batteries at eco-conscious locations like Staples or MOM’s Organic Market in Mosaic District.

  4. Hazardous Waste Management:
Items like old paint, chemicals, and other hazardous materials are brought to the Fairfax County Transfer Station, ensuring they are handled according to environmental safety standards.

  5. Clothing and Household Donations:
Gently used clothing, children's toys, books, cribs, and even unexpired car seats are donated to the Columbia Baptist Church Food Pantry for families in need.

  6. Creative Giving:
Items that don't fit traditional donation categories—like leftover birthday party supplies or holiday decorations—are offered to local neighbors through Buy Nothing groups, giving them a second life.

  7. Traditional Donations:
Items in good condition are also brought to our local Goodwill to support their mission and provide affordable goods to the community.

Additional Services:

  • Donation Receipts:
We are happy to provide tax-deductible donation receipts to any client who requests one.

  • Consignment and Resale Options:
For an additional fee, we offer consignment services through local boutiques like Blossom & Buds and Lemon Lane Consignment.
We can also handle selling select items on Facebook Marketplace to help you recover some value from higher-end pieces.
