Keeping kids’ toys organized can feel like a full-time job—but with the right systems, it becomes so much easier! At Sort It Out, helping families create functional, organized spaces is one of our most common (and favorite!) services.

Before I had kids of my own, I loved using woven baskets to conceal toys and keep rooms looking tidy. However, after becoming a mom, I quickly realized that toddlers are much more likely to engage in independent play when they can see what’s available. Now, we often recommend switching to clear acrylic containers for young children. Visibility encourages kids to choose toys on their own and fosters independent playtime.

Closets Aren't Just for Clothes
In many homes, kids have more toys than clothing! When that’s the case, we love to repurpose kids' closets for extra toy storage. It’s a great way to maximize your space and keep toys organized and accessible.

Use Furniture That Grows with Your Family
We frequently recommend IKEA Kallax bookshelves for toy storage. They perfectly fit standard toy bins and are low enough for toddlers to reach independently—making cleanup and playtime a breeze.

Labels Make a Big Difference
When setting up storage systems for toddlers and preschoolers, we like to take it a step further by printing a photo of the toy that belongs in each bin and labeling the container with it. This visual cue makes it easier for young kids to clean up independently and know where everything belongs.

Toy Storage Solutions for Main Living Areas
When you have young kids, it’s realistic to have toys in your main living spaces. However, that doesn’t mean your living room has to look like a playroom! When purchasing furniture, we recommend pieces with hidden storage. For example, in one recent project, we used the drawers of a secretary desk, paired with matching bins, to neatly store kids' toys—keeping the room stylish and functional.
