Eco-Friendly Organizing: Thoughtful Choices That Support Your Home & the Planet

April is Earth Month, making it the perfect time to think about how our organizing choices impact both our homes and the environment. Eco-friendly organizing doesn’t require a complete overhaul or perfection—it’s about making intentional, realistic decisions that reduce waste, limit unnecessary purchases, and create systems that last.

Here are four approachable ways to organize more sustainably—strategies I use both in client homes and in my own.

1. Reuse Glass Jars Whenever Possible

Over the past year or two, our family has made a conscious effort to choose groceries packaged in glass when there’s an option. This helps reduce microplastic exposure and has the added benefit of containers that are easier to recycle—or better yet, reuse.

Former pasta sauce jars now hold pantry staples like chia seeds, nuts, and grains, while small mason jars are perfect for craft supplies, loose hardware, or tiny toys. Repurposing what you already have is one of the simplest and most effective eco-friendly organizing habits.

Reused glass jars paired with an Elfa over-the-door organizer create an eco-friendly, space-efficient pantry system—proof that sustainable organizing can be both practical and beautiful.

2. Choose Bamboo or Wood Over Plastic

Clear acrylic became wildly popular with the rise of organizing television shows, but learning that nearly all plastic ever created is still in existence—and will remain for centuries—was a turning point for me (Greenpeace).

When possible, I opt for bamboo or other wooden options. They’re durable, timeless, and bring warmth to a space. Today’s market offers many beautiful wood-based organizing solutions that feel intentional rather than trendy—and that’s often a better long-term investment for both your home and the planet.

3. Choose Used Before Buying New

Living in Falls Church City, I’m lucky to be part of a very active Buy Nothing community. Neighbors regularly share items like bins, baskets, and shelving that are still in great condition. I’ve also used Facebook Marketplace when sourcing items for my own home.

Choosing secondhand reduces waste, saves money, and keeps perfectly useful organizing products out of landfills. It’s a win all around—and often leads to finding higher-quality items than what’s available new.

4. Edit First, Then Organize What Truly Belongs

The most eco-friendly organizing choice is often owning and storing less. Before purchasing containers or systems, take time to edit what you already have. Decluttering intentionally reduces demand for new products and allows your organizing systems to be built around what truly belongs in the space.

We frequently see homes over-containerized—bins purchased before decisions are made. Editing first means you can reuse items you already own, borrow from other areas of your home, or determine whether a single, thoughtfully chosen solution is all that’s needed. Fewer items lead to fewer containers, simpler systems, and easier maintenance over time.

Eco-friendly organizing isn’t about doing everything “right”—it’s about making mindful choices that support your lifestyle while being gentler on the planet.

Thoughtful Organizing Includes Thoughtful Letting Go

Sustainable organizing also means being mindful about where items go once they leave your home. At Sort It Out, we focus on eco-friendly decluttering by prioritizing donation, reuse, and responsible disposal whenever possible—helping reduce landfill waste while supporting our local community.

Whenever we can, we donate usable items thoughtfully and intentionally, working to keep them in circulation and out of the trash. This approach is an essential part of how we help families create lighter, more sustainable homes.
